Cazzi Opeia – Rich

“A video that looks like a school project demonstrating all the effects a kid can possibly hunt down.”

Tim: Cazzi’s recently been doing a bit of song writing for a couple of K-Pop groups (TWICE and Red Velvet, in case you fancy looking them up), but has now released tis herself, almost a year after her last. Which was pretty decent, as it happens.

Tim: And while we’ve a video that looks like a school project demonstrating all the effects a kid can possibly hunt down (which is pretty impressive if that was the goal), I like the song very much. Bouncy, fun, enjoyable, and a good (and, now I think about it, almost surprisingly unusual) way of dealing with the naughty words in the chorus). That ‘riiiiiiiiich’ is striking and attention grabbing; possibly a little divisive, and I wasn’t sure what to make when I first heard it. A few listens in, though: I’m all on board with it. Nice.

Cazzi Opeia – Wild Ones

“Less of a not-quite-Icona-Pop, more of a not-quite-Sia. “

Tim: Let’s put Christmas aside for a bit, because we probably should, and you may or may not remember Cazzi Opeia’s most recent outing, Batman & Robin; if you don’t, there’s not much need to revisit it.

Tom: I do remember it! It was like Icona Pop’s “I Love It”, except significantly weirder. And not quite as good.

Tim: Sounds about right, yeah. This one’s a good deal more sensible, though not necessarily any more…standard? Possibly the closest word…oh, just press play.

Tom: Less of a not-quite-Icona-Pop, more of a not-quite-Sia. Including a child actor starring as “younger version of singer”. And the title “Wild Ones”, now I come to think of. Hm.

Tim: String samples, vocal twists, what sounds like reversed audio in there, a good beat all coming together to make a song that’s unexpectedly enjoyable. Unexpected, that is, because it really is quite a mish mash of elements, and it takes a hell of a skilled producer to make it sound good.

Tom: Enjoyable? Alas, it was just a bit dull for me: I’ll admit the chorus is burned into my head, but that’s because it’s a bit slow and repetitive. The mishmash keeps it from being a complete non-starter, but I just can’t get excited about it. Why’s it enjoyable for you?

Tim: Hard to say any immediate reasoning, other that it really just does it for me. Though if I did have to pick one specific moment, when it’s coming back in for that final chorus, it got me instinctively moving my head back and forth, in a good way. This…this is nice.

Cazzi Opeia & Jin X Jin – Batman & Robin

“This isn’t a track I really want to mount a defence of.”

Tim: Currently, if I hear someone saying “I had a dream”, my brain goes straight for Kygo & Selena Gomez, which is still a proper tune and a half. That may change, though, as I present the most surreal song/video I’ve come across in a quite a while.

Tom: “Swedish/Korean duo”. Well, that… that is, like most of this song, not something I’ve heard before.

Tim: I’ll be honest: I’ve no idea. I will say that a dream about being double teamed by Bruno Mars and Nicki Minaj sounds vastly more interesting and exciting than one about sipping whiskey to get over a breakup, so we’re certainly one better than Selena here for subconscious creativity.

Tom: Well, that’s true, but on the other hand that repeated “banana, banana, banana” refrain is perhaps the most irritating lyric that I’ve heard in a long while. Sure, I can remember it now, but I don’t want to.

Tim: That, yeah I could agree with.

Tom: There are good bits in here. Honestly, there are. And I’ve defended this sort of bubblegum pop before. But this isn’t a track I really want to mount a defence of, regardless of how surreal its video might be.

Tim: Fair.

Cazzi Opeia – My Heart In 2

If you’re a fan of bad puns and unusual haircuts, you’re halfway to liking this lady.

Tim: If you’re a fan of bad puns and unusual haircuts, you’re halfway to liking this lady.

Tom: I like both of those things.

Tim: And by now, you should be all the way there. I’d not heard of her before I saw a link to this video, but I wish I had because she’s actually done quite a few good tracks, including this one. The ooo-oo-oo-ooo bits in the chorus strike me as particularly good.

Tom: I’m not sure I have anything to add to that. It’s a decent track, although after playing it through once I’m not sure I can remember it all that well. It’s a good chorus, but it’s not a catchy one. I’d dance to it – I probably wouldn’t sing along.

Tim: On the other hand, I have trouble paying attention to this – good as it is, I keep getting bored halfway through, and moving on to other stuff. Perhaps it’s not lively and varied enough to keep my attention, and yet it clearly is. Maybe it’s too lively, and I keep wanting to get up and do things. Your thoughts?

Tom: Much the same.
