Saturday Flashback: Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On (Tony Moran Mix)

“WHAT AN UTTER TUNE.”

Tim: For those that haven’t heard, the noted film composer James Horner died this week; normally I wouldn’t bother mentioning this sort of thing, but he did the score for Titanic, which means he’s indirectly responsible for this ABSOLUTE BANGER.

Tim: Because WHAT AN UTTER TUNE.

Tom: So that’s who remixed it! Tony Moran! I’ll tell you what, teenage me downloaded this over Napster many, many years ago, and it was tagged just as “Dance Mix”. Haven’t heard it in years, but that brought back some memories.

Tim: Well, I first heard this on the compilation CD Fresh Hits 98, and I thought “this doesn’t sound quite right” and then quickly thought “this sounds GREAT.” I mean some might argue it goes somewhat against the grain of the original song, much like some borings sods complain about the Metro Mix of Enrique Iglesias’s Hero, but seriously are you kidding me? When it sounds like this, who cares?

Tom: Agreed. And it’s not like Almighty, where they got someone to re-record it: it’s the original vocals.

Tim: It has EVERYTHING the already lovely original version has, along with a whole SHEDLOAD of other stuff, such as that impossible to write three beat noise that comes halfway through each chorus, or that drumming build up to the final YOOOOOOOU’RE HEEEEEERE. Basically, it takes a great ballad and turns it into a fantastic banger, and what more can you ask for? Answer: NOTHING.

Celine Dion feat. Ne-Yo – Incredible

“A lot better than I was worried it might be.”

Tom: Who featuring who?!

Tim: Yes featuring yes. You may remember back in November, when we looked at Loved Me Back To Life, the first single off Celine’s most recent album, I briefly mentioned the Ne-Yo collaboration on it. Well, now that has a video.

Tim: And that there is a heck of a lot better than I was worried it might be. Ne-Yo typically comes with bucketloads of autotune, rapping & hip-hop stuff and naughty words, none of which should be visited upon a Celine song.

Tom: Agreed. Crikey, they’ve both got good voices, haven’t they — even if Celine’s is a lot more instantly recognisable.

Tim: Right – what we end up with is a lovely duet between two lovers, which to be honest I initially thought would be a little icky but then I checked Wikipedia and the ages are a lot closer than you’d probably imagine.

Tom: Half age plus seven… huh. All right, carry on.

Tim: So in the end my worries proved to be all unfounded, because this is a great track, right from the first time we hear that soaring oh-oh-oh-o-oh right through until the final ‘amazing’. Love it.

Celine Dion – Loved Me Back To Life

Beauty and the Beast it is not.

Tim: It’s a slight shame that Celine’s SoundCloud has her name on it, because it would be quite fun to play a “guess the singer” game after you’ve heard this. Beauty and the Beast it is not.

Tom: Oh, that’s strange, isn’t it? It’s a dark ballad written for a modern pop singer, but that’s obviously Celine’s vocal performance. I… I rather like that.

Tim: This is not a place I, or indeed pretty much everybody else, ever really imagined the Taking Chances hitmaker to visit, and yet she has, and with an almost surprising amount of success.

Tom: I really shouldn’t be surprised by this – she’s got one hell of a voice and the eighth best-selling single of all time. With hindsight, this is almost an obvious step to take – but only with hindsight.

Tim: Aside from the frankly incredible Tony Moran mix of My Heart Will Go On, dance music was never really something I thought Celine Dion could work with, and certainly not two-step. But yet – it’s brilliant. It was written by Sia (most notable for being half of David Guetta feat. Sia) and features a very modern sound, but still brings the epic vocals that she’s best known for. This really is quite the triumph.

Tom: That’s who else it sounds like! Yes! It sounds like a Sia track – that’s brilliant!

Tim: If this isn’t enough for you, she’s described her upcoming album as her ‘edgiest record to date’, and features two tracks written by Ne-Yo, one of which is called Incredible. Really. But now we’re going to finish with this. Because every Celine Dion discussion should finish with this. And open with this. And, probably, consist solely of this.
